The Lingen Davies Linac Appeal

The Linac Appeal was launched in August 2000 to raise £350,000 to house a second Linear Accelerator at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Radiotherapy treatment machines are only provided in 'Cancer Centres', and without the Radiotherapy Department at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, cancer patients from Shropshire and Mid Wales would have to travel out of the county (to Birmingham, Wolverhampton or Stoke) for treatment.

To maintain the cancer centre status the Authorities stipulate it is necessary to have two up-to-date cancer treatment machines.

Thanks to generous public support, the Appeal target was reached in 18 months.

The new building was completed and the new Linear Accelerator was installed and in use by the end of 2002.
