The Radiotherapy Department
(Cobalt Unit)

The Radiotherapy Department, then called the Colbalt Unit, was opened in 1982 following a major appeal to raise £1.25 million.

Before the unit opened, patients from all over Shropshire and Mid Wales had to travel to Birmingham, Wolverhampton or Stoke to receive their treatment for cancer.

In 1995 an extension was built to the Radiotherapy Department to house a Linear Accelerator (a Radiotherapy treatment machine for cancer)

In 2000 a major Appeal was launched to provide a second Linear Accelerator.

The Cobalt machine was de-commissioned in 2002.
